Before downloading and installing Specify it would be helpful to review site installation options and to print the downloadable Specify Installation and Setup Guide. Do not use SQL Server 2008 for any version of Specify! Contact us for instructions to get a version of SQL Server 2005 Express if necessary.

(Note: If you are upgrading from Specify 3.2 or earlier, please contact us before proceeding for guidance.)

  • If you have not already installed MSDE, SQL Server 2005 Express, or some other edition of SQL Server 2005 as a data manager, review the online Specify Site Installation Options page to understand your site installation options, and download and read the Specify 5.2 Installation and Setup Guide(PDF, 18.2 MB) for a step-by-step description of actual installation and setup procedures. These same procedures apply to Specify 5.2.1 and 5.2.2 installs. Do not use SQL Server 2008 for any version of Specify! Contact us for instructions to get a version of SQL Server 2005 Express if necessary.
  • If you already have a data manager installed and are ready to install Specify 5.2.3, download the Specify 5.2.3 Installer. The Specify 5.2 Installation and Setup Guide (PDF, 18.2 MB) contains step by step instructions on configuring Specify for the first time.  If you are new to Specify, it would be useful to download and print the Guide.
  • If you are upgrading an existing Specify Installation, note that the Specify web and DiGIR interfaces from Specify 5.11 installations (and earlier) do not upgrade automatically and that Specify 5.2.3 does not work with 5.11 (and earlier) web interface. You will need to reinstall our new Specify 5.2 web and DiGIR provider interfaces if you wish to use those protocols. If you are upgrading from Specify 5.2 to 5.2.3, then you must delete all the web searches prior to upgrading and then re-create them once you are running 5.2.3. Then, re-deploy the web queries. You do not need to reinstall the web server.  You do not need to do this if upgrading from 5.2.1 or 5.2.2 to 5.2.3. The DiGIR server setup remains the same from Specify 5.2 to 5.2.3.
  • Once you have Specify installed, the updated Specify 5.2 User Manual is automatically installed as the Specify help system. It is also accessible from the above link in various formats. The online help installed within Specify and the Specify User Manual available from this web site, are the same document.
  • If you plan to set up a DiGIR provider with Specify 5, please see the Specify DiGIR FAQ, and the DiGIR installation notes in the Specify Installation and Setup Guide. Then when you are ready, download and run the Specify DiGIR installer package: (Specify52DiGIRprovider.exe).
