Specify runs on Windows workstations with modest power and storage levels. Machines with fast processors and generous amounts of memory improve performance.

Hardware and Software Requirements

Supported operating systems:
  • Windows 2003 Server, XP Pro, Vista Business & Ultimate
Specify is no longer supported on:
  • Windows 2000, XP Home, ME, NT, 98, 95
Database manager software:
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server Express 2005. For computers that do not have SQL Server or Express installed, instructions for setting up SQL Server 2005 express are available on the Specify site. Please note that only the English versions of SQL Server 2005 and SQL Express 2005 are supported (but Specify 5.x works with any Western European language character set in its data and user interface). Please note that Specify 5 does NOT work with Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Please contact us if you need assistance in downloading Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005.
